TITLE: ALTERNATIVE LEARNING TEACHER – MIDDLE SCHOOL
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required, holding current South Dakota teaching certificate, or possess the ability to become properly certified and endorsed by the start of assignment.
- Middle school teaching experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrate experience in academic intervention and student support services.
- Familiarity with PBIS and AMLE’s essential attributes and characteristics of successful middle grades schools.
- Ability to analyze and interpret academic and behavioral data.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Passion for working with early adolescents and commitment to their holistic development.
REPORTS TO: Middle School Principals
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Alternative Learning Teacher is a key member of the middle school support team, providing targeted academic and behavioral interventions for students performing below grade level. This position is rooted in the principles of AMLE’s middle level philosophy and PBIS, ensuring every student is known, valued, and supported. The teacher works collaboratively with other teachers, student services, and school leadership to identify students in need of additional support, develop data-informed intervention plans, and help implement school-wide initiatives that promote student success.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Up and down motion in the office; bending stretching; and lifting up to 40 pounds. Mobility in and around office/school area.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver Academic Interventions:
Provide direct academic support and interventions to students who are performing below grade level, both individually and in small group settings.
- Data Analysis and Progress Monitoring:
Collaborate with teachers and school teams to analyze assessment data and other relevant student performance indicators to identify students in need of support. Monitor and track student progress regularly.
- Collaboration with Staff:
Work closely with classroom teachers and support staff to design and implement effective intervention strategies tailored to individual student needs.
- Student Support:
Build positive relationships with students to encourage academic perseverance and motivation. Serve as a mentor and academic coach for struggling students.
- Support School Initiatives:
Assist in the implementation of school-wide academic and behavioral initiatives that promote a culture of success and achievement.
- Documentation and Communication:
Maintain accurate records of student interventions and progress. Communicate regularly with families, teachers, and administration regarding student needs and successes.
- Professional Development:
Stay informed of best practices in instructional strategies, interventions, and data analysis. Participate in ongoing professional learning opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of contract: 180 days
EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
This position will be evaluated annually by the Middle School Principal(s).
