TITLE:                      SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Associates Degree from a speech-language pathology assistant program which is accredited or a Bachelor’s degree in the field of communication sciences or disorders;
2. Properly licensed as speech language pathology assistant in the state of South Dakota or able to achieve licensure.
3. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of a Speech Language Pathology Assistant;
4. General knowledge of school-based speech-language therapy theory and practice;
5. General knowledge of special education practices and procedures;
6. Ability to demonstrate confidentiality;
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and district staff;
8. Ability to handle a variety of typical assignments or problems independently;
9. Ability to read and interpret basic workplace data;
10. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
11. Ability to write clearly and concisely;
12. Ability to use current office equipment, technology and related software;
13. Must have valid driver’s license and be able to drive.

REPORTS TO:  Director of Special Services

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The speech language pathology assistant provides speech and language therapy to children who are identified as being in need of special education, specifically speech and language therapy, in the school setting or for children ages birth to 3 in their natural environment, under the direction of a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

1. Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
2. This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods.
3. Persons performing service in this position must be able to be outside for specified periods of time (at least 30 minutes) in all types of climate situations, including temperatures that are below zero.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide direct speech and language therapy to children and youth under the supervision of the SLP;
2. Implement documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the SLP;
3. Maintain records and documentation required for speech and language therapy services
4. Participate in student planning meetings, parent conferences and IEPs under the supervision of the SLP;
5. Collaborate with the SLP in the development and modification of student programs;
6. Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

Salary and work year to be established in accordance with the Board of Education policy.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:

This position is responsible to the Director of Special Services and the performance of this position will be evaluated by the Director of Special Services.
